Today is International Women’s Day (IWD), and the theme for IWD 2016 is “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step it up for Gender Equality.” http://www.unwomen.org/en/news/in-focus/international-womens-day#sthash.ypuldrCi.dpuf. This year’s theme highlights the continued focus and support that is needed for women’s rights, and participation in political and economic areas. It is a day set aside to reflect on the progress that has been made, to continue the call for change and to celebrate the achievements of women who have played a role in shaping the history of their countries and communities.
Along with the celebration and recognition of IWD, March is designated as Women’s History Month. The 2016 theme for Women’s History Month is “Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government.” This year’s theme highlights and honors women who have, through their public service and government leadership, played a role in shaping not only the history of America but also its future.
Clearly this is a time for all women to celebrate each other; to encourage each other in our endeavors, big and small; to lift up our fellow sisters and help them to be all that they can be; and to do all that they can do. Progressive Achievers will also give homage to women. Beginning today, and every month leading up to our 10-Year Anniversary Black Tie Gala to be held later this year, we will feature women in a variety of fields.
To kick things off, the first woman to be featured is none other than the First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama. Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama is an American lawyer and writer. She is married to the 44th and current President of the United States, Barack Obama, and is the first African-American First Lady of the United States. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, she is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She spent the early part of her legal career working at the law firm Sidley Austin, where she met Barack. Subsequently, she worked as part of the staff of Chicago mayor Richard M. Daley, and for the University of Chicago Medical Center.
